Explore Highland Lake
No matter what time of year you stay, you’ll find that Maine's Highland Lake area has it all. With nearly 17 miles of shoreline, this 1,334-acre body of water is perfect for peaceful activities like fishing and kayaking, yet big enough for water skiing, sailing, pontooning and other powerboating.
Historically, Highland Lake has served as both a weekend getaway for nearby cities like Portland, ME (just 45 minutes away) and as a summer getaway for those journeying from surrounding states. Today you’ll find a nice mix of summer cottages and year-round homes nestled on our wooded shores.
If it’s fishing you fancy, you’ll discover several species of warm-water fish, as the average depth of Highland Lake is 20 feet, reaching as low as 50 feet in a few spots. The lake is heavily stocked with brown trout & there is plenty of smallmouth bass to be caught as well. You’ll be amazed at the variety! Other species include pumpkinseed, chain pickerel, sunfish, yellow perch, largemouth bass & a few others. You might even find a Northern Pike. If you do, please don’t release them back into the lake. You can get a license and bait just a mile down the road at Unc’l Lunkers Bait and Tackle store. We even have a few fishing poles laying around in case you forget yours.
If you’re in the mood for a quiet gentle ride in the lake, you’re in luck. Here at Grady's, we have a canoe, paddleboards, and a paddle boat you can take out anytime. Don’t be surprised if a loon or duck comes right up and swims next to you or walks up to join you on the beach. If you go out early in the morning, you’ll be sure to hear the loons. You can also bring your own boat and tie it up to our dock or one of our mooring buoys.
Can’t make it for summer? That’s alright. Highland Lake is winter home to cross-country skiers, ice-fisherman and snowmobilers. We’re just minutes from Pleasant Mountain where skiers and boarders of all ages & skills enjoy a great time on the slopes. If you’re in town in February, be sure to catch the Maine Lakes Winter Carnival.
Books have been written about all the wonderful things you can do here in “Vacationland”, so reserve your stay now and get ready to relax at Grady’s Motel on beautiful Highland Lake.
